¾ cup softened butter
1 cup powdered sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2½ cups flour
¼ teaspoon salt
Or a ready to make cookies mix

Directions:
Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy in a large bowl. Beat in egg and vanilla. Combine the flour and salt, add this gradually to the creamed mixture and mix well. Cover and refrigerate for 2 hours or until easy to handle.

On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough in small balls. Press the balls until they have the size of a button and then press an edge into each cookie by using a bottle cap. Then use a straw and press  4 or 2 holes into each cookie.

Bake at 180° for 10-15 minutes or until edges are lightly browned.

Tip: to give the buttons a finishing touch, you can also dip it in chocolate or lace a licorice string or ribbon through the holes of the cookies.
